THE STORY OF THE BIRTH VILLAGE CLASS
In 2013, three local doulas decided to design a childbirth class that would thoroughly prepare the expectant parents in our community for birth. We wanted to give parents evidence-based information, to help them know what to expect from labor, birth, and the newborn period, and to give them the skills they needed to have the best birth possible.
We met in a cozy sun room at one of our homes and hammered out what topics we wanted to cover, how the course would be structured, and which doula would teach which classes. The result was the Birth Village Class, a six-unit childbirth class which covered pregnancy through postpartum.
The class has been through many changes since then. Teachers have come and gone, and the structure and content of the class has been refined too. But the heart of the class has never changed. The class has always been taught by one or more doulas with experience supporting mothers through birth. And the goal of the class has always been to help the parents of East Central Alabama to have the preparation they need to have the best birth possible.
